In vitro dermal absorption tissue studies are performed within MIVO with porcine biopsies or 3D reconstructed human epidermis. Test formulations are applied to the upper surface and their concentration are measured at pre-determined time points from the reservoir chamber. The biological effects of the test compound on the skin can be also assessed. Skin studies are used to assess the feasibility of transdermal administration, to rank-order compounds in terms of permeability or accumulation, and to optimize formulations.
