Promoting women’s health: a 3D model study on vaginal dryness treated with probiotic L. crispatus

Vaginal dryness can cause discomfort, itching, pain during intercourse, and post-coital bleeding, compromising the well-being of many women, especially during hormonal changes such as menopause or contraceptive use. It is crucial to maintain microbial balance in the vagina to regulate pH and prevent infections. Lactobacilli play a key role in vaginal health, but alterations in the microbial community can increase vulnerability to infections, particularly in the presence of vaginal dryness. Probiotics are showing promise in supporting vaginal health. Our research investigates the benefits of the probiotic strain L. crispatus LCR04 (DSM 33487) both at the genomic level by bioinformatic tools and using an advanced 3D model that simulates vaginal dryness.
