A new reliable organ on chip based system to investigate gut absorption in vitro

Absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion (ADME) are biological processes involving several organs (i.e.intestine, liver, kidneys) and determining the bioavailability of drugs. In particular, the absorption, mainly occurring at the intestinal level, is the first crucial step establishing the drug fraction which successfully enters the blood circulation. However, systematic and quantitative studies of the absorption of molecules are quite limited due to alack of reliable experimental models able to mimic human in vivo responses. Organs-on-chips (OOCs) have offered the chance to recreate models of different tissues, speeding up the drug discovery and development processes.
