Due to the poor predictability of preclinical assays, oncology clinical trials have a low success rate.

Therefore, the validation of novel experimental assays is essential for a more accurate assessment of novel cancer treatments. We will show an innovative multi-compartmental configuration of the MIVO platform to fluidically connect 3D ovarian cancer tissues to hepatic cellular models and simulate the systemic administration of cisplatin.

This approach enables a simultaneous investigation of drug efficacy and hepatotoxic effects in a physiological context. Most notably, toxicity and efficacy results from an experimental strategy integrating 3D culture, fluid-dynamic conditions, and multi-organ connectivity are the most accurate if compared to clinical data, proving that OOC-based strategies are trustworthy 3Rs alternatives in preclinical settings.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

Chiara Vitale received a bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Engineering (2018) and a master’s degree in Bioengineering (2019) at the University of Genoa, Italy. During the training period for her master’s thesis at the National Research Council of Italy, she collaborated in the Future Emerging Technology (FET-OPEN) H2020 project entitled “Modeling spontaneous Breast cancer metastasis TO the Bone with a first-of-its-kind 3D device that recapitulates physiological tissue-level complexity -B2B”, under the supervision of the coordinator Silvia Scaglione. She is now attending the second year of her Ph.D. in Clinical and Experimental Immunology at the Department of Experimental Medicine of the University of Genoa.

Silvia Scaglione is the founder and chief scientist of React4life, author of more than 80 international peer-reviewed papers, and owner of 7 patents. She is currently the coordinator of a Future Emerging Technology (FET-OPEN) European H2020 project, entitled “Modeling spontaneous Breast cancer metastasis TO the Bone with a first-of-its-kind 3D device that recapitulates physiological tissue-level complexity -B2B”.
She’s been recently nominated as Ambassador of the European Innovation Council (EIC) for her capacity to bring basic research results to the market, generating impact for society. She has also recently won the innovative start-up award of Gamma Donna 2021.
